BUECI Seeks Board Candidates

BARROW, AK., February 28, 2024 – Barrow Utilities and Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BUECI) is seeking individuals interested in appointment to the utility’s board of directors due to a vacancy. The vacancy occurred when Director Price E. Brower passed away on February 10, 2024. The Board is required to appoint a member to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term, which expires in April 2026.

Application Procedure
Candidates must submit a letter of interest to the Board of Directors that speaks to their qualifications to serve on the board and that demonstrates that the candidate meets the qualifications listed below. Resumes may be attached to the letter of interest but are not required.  Candidates may be asked to participate in interviews or provide additional information after submitting a letter of interest.

 Qualifications
In accordance with the BUECI Bylaws, Article IV – Directors, Section 3. Qualifications, directors must:

  1. be a bona fide resident of Barrow, Alaska,
  2. be a member of the Cooperative in good standing,
  3. not be an employee of the Cooperative, presently or in the past 2 years,
  4. never have been terminated from the Cooperative,
  5. have not been convicted of a felony that has not had their civil rights restored.

 

 Deadline

Duties
The utility’s board of directors sets policy for the utility, recommends bylaw changes to the membership, and reviews financial and operational reports. Specifically, the board approves annual budgets, sets rates, and approves capital purchases. The board also directs a general manager who is responsible for day-to-day operation of the utility.

Meetings
The board holds regular business meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
Special meetings and workshops are held on an as-needed basis. In addition, board members represent the utility in state and national organizations which generally includes one in-state trip and two out-of-state conferences per year.
